This brought a realism and moody aesthetic to the cinematography in the political advertising campaign. Early in pre-production for the commercial, we talked about the set dressing and props as a team. I suggested using diffused, Japanese-style room dividers. Sports or athletic videos are all about capturing the athlete's kinetic energy while doing it safely and making the action look natural. This project drew inspiration from commercials for Nike, Under Armor, and Gatorade, setting out to create a cinematic, energetic, and inspiring spot. This was a first-time collaboration between director Isaac Williams and I. We jumped right into the story and planned out the pacing and flow. We wanted each workout to intensify through the storyline, ending in the character pushing beyond his mental and physical capabilities to succeed at the last exercise. We shot in a CrossFit gym, so we had a wide variety of exercise equipment that our talent could use. We wanted to introduce the athlete getting ready, warming up, then starting the workout session. We selected exercises based on visuals and intensity, then chose different areas in the gym for each workout. This is how the shotlist began. We only had one production day to get everything in the can, so scheduling was very important. We had to make sure not to burn out the athlete or myself before all of our shots were captured. We scheduled the day to have a roller coaster rhythm, moving from slow to intense. This plan made the day achievable and gave us recovery time. There’s always a fine line of pushing talent enough to get what’s needed, but not pushing to the point of exhaustion. Our talent, Michael Blue is in great shape, and was really able to push hard. We even had to add fake sweat to make him seem more exhausted than he actually was. After shooting with us all day, he also did his daily workout routine. The key to realism is paying close attention to talent even when not rolling. I watched him out of the corner of my eye, looking for any natural moment we could use. A few times, I saw Michael moving to the music or panting, and I immediately started rolling. Moments like that are natural and hard to recreate when talent is aware of the roll. For the story, we needed slow moments when he caught his breath. We had him drink from a water bottle, but it didn’t look natural. What ended up working was one of the moments I kept rolling after a workout set. He was out of breath, bent over, and gave a long exhale. We captured the perfect moment, and that’s my favorite spot in the commercial. Another trick I often do with sports cinematography is roll even after “cut” is yelled. I wanted to make sure we got any little moments that we could use in the edit. Sometimes there’s little gems at the tail end of a clip. Editor Tim McLaughlin was able to work those into the edit. One of these moments was when Blue finished with dumbbell flies and dropped the dumbbells on his last set. We embraced a darker look with color contrast to highlight the athlete. I chose to shoot anamorphic on the Atlas Orion lenses, embracing the lens flares, widescreen aspect ratio and the cinematic aesthetic. We added atmospheric haze, then I lit with a toppy warm overhead and steel blue backlight. This approach gave it strong sports cinematography visuals, which I’ve always loved. I shot all the action elements with the EasyRig, giving it a very dynamic and energetic feel. This lends itself to cinematic sports cinematography visuals. In the color grade with Brandon Jones we dialed in the warmth and blues. The blue from the flares and the steel blue backlight are not the same color of blue. When a heavily flared shot followed a primarily steel blue shot, he had to cheat the blues a bit so it flowed better. Brandon is a magician with color and I always love working with him! I’m very proud of what we achieved as a team in this spec project for Rogue Fitness. I love the kinetic energy of sports cinematography and creating excellent visuals featuring athletes. Filmmaking is a collaborative craft and the quality of each crew member is always seen on screen. This may sound like an exaggeration, but I’ve found it to always be true. A team is only as good as its teammates. Filmmaking tends to be a stressful environment, calling for quick pivots and lots of creativity. Assembling a collaborative team, especially for lifestyle cinematography, is essential for overcoming challenges and creating a smooth production. In addition to the producer and director, my pivotal collaborators are always my gaffer and camera assistant. My approach for the lifestyle cinematography video was to use lighting to evoke a mood and enhance the story. Collaborating with a gaffer whose skills were on par with my strong lighting background helped me deliver strong cinematic visuals. I brought on a camera assistant who was sharp and organized, supporting my camera needs so that I could work closer with the director and client. The camera assistant and gaffer, along with the rest of my crew, helped bring the director’s vision to the screen and delivered high-quality, lifestyle cinematography on schedule. I decided to shoot anamorphic for a moody and cinematic look with shafts of light and flares breaking through the darkness to portray luminous hope. I knew we wouldn't have much time on set for lighting, so I came up with a solid gear list ahead of time, assuring I would have the right tools on the shoot day. Food cinematography has a special place in my heart (and stomach) because I love eating delicious food, and lighting food is exciting for me as a director of photography. Finding the best camera angle and the perfect position for each light is key to delivering mouth-watering food cinematography. I’ve shot everything from Kraft recipe videos to VFX-heavy Instagram ads for Nestlé. Colavita wanted to highlight their premium Italian extra virgin olive oil in a short web advertising video. Every project I shoot begins well before shoot day in pre-production, and each director has a different approach in their planning process. This project was the first time I collaborated with director John Baumgartner. It turns out we both love the planning stage of pre-production, so it was a perfect match. He had storyboards and a rough animatic, which began our collaboration as we talked about the food cinematography. We discussed each dish and the mood we wanted to create in the scene. Through this process, I built a mood for the food cinematography with some scenes warmer, cooler, or mixed in the color. On the location scout, I shot storyboard stills, so we knew the exact angle for every shot. The extensive planning process paid off on the shoot day. We knew exactly what we needed and how to achieve each mood through the camera and lighting placement to produce excellent food cinematography. The planning helped food stylist Nicky Morse schedule out the food prep so each dish was camera ready when the lighting was set up. This can be a real challenge when different vendors or crews change over the life of the advertising campaign. Last year, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) began their upbeat advertising campaign called “Let’s Go Together.” Advertising agency Brokaw continued the campaign with new spots this year. I was new to the project and helped them create fresh ads to match the established style of the previous spots. I began pre-production by studying the previous spots in the advertising campaign and making note of the visual approach. The previous spots were shot on the Arri Amira with Zeiss Standard Speed lenses, so I maintained some of the look by using the same gear. Water cinematography is always a challenge, but we were able to capture the heartfelt story with an underwater housing. I believe the tools of cinematography should always support the story and not get in the way.
